Student Research Group ONOMA

We are a linguistics research group with a long-standing tradition, operating within the Institute of Linguistics at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Opole.

In recent years, the group has undergone a transformation, and thanks to its actively engaged members, we have expanded our activities to include all branches of linguistics. We are currently particularly interested in topics related to sociolinguistics, inclusive language, linguistic landscape, and the linguistic worldview.

We actively conduct various research projects, including comparative studies of feminine, masculine, and neuter forms in Finnish and Polish. For many years, we have also been inspiring young people in primary and secondary schools to broaden their linguistic knowledge by organising the annual Polish Language Knowledge Competition. During this event, participants can test themselves not only in literature, grammar, and spelling, but also in rhetoric through the oratory part of the competition.

In addition to our academic work, we are also involved in outreach activities, promoting science—especially linguistics—through various workshops, including our traditional “Afternoons with Onoma”, as well as in cooperation with the European university consortium FORTHEM.

We warmly welcome anyone who would like to engage in the activities of our group and become part of a growing community of young researchers exploring language.
