Study Programmes

Studies at the Faculty of Philology go beyond advanced language learning. In addition to acquiring language skills in Polish, English, German, Russian, and French at C1 level, students also have the opportunity to learn a second language at B2 level. These include Spanish, Italian, German, Chinese, or Polish as a foreign language, depending on the programme. Studying at the Faculty of Philology is also a chance to develop passions for which a given language is an important foundation. By choosing one of the first-cycle degree programmes, students can broaden their knowledge in linguistics, literature, video games, new media, law, and economics. This comprehensive knowledge equips students with the competencies to work as a translator, editor, cultural animator, or PR specialist. Second-cycle studies serve as a natural continuation of a student’s chosen path. They culminate in a perfect command of foreign languages, documented by achieving C2 level, and provide professional preparation for numerous career roles. In second-cycle programmes, students have the opportunity to obtain full teaching qualifications. Under the expert guidance of experienced academic staff, students refine their research skills. Writing a Master’s thesis can serve as the first step toward doctoral studies and a future academic career. Scientific conferences and training sessions organized by the Faculty of Philology are also an excellent opportunity to gain valuable research experience. An additional element of the study experience is the international and multicultural atmosphere. This is fostered by various projects, study abroad opportunities, and contact with international students.

DIGITAL CULTURES

The programme aims to embed elements of game studies and knowledge of digital environments within a broader context of linguistic and cultural studies. It aims to provide knowledge of digital space and culture as platforms of communication. In terms of skills, the focus is placed on communicative competencies, including marketing and PR. The programme focuses on navigating and managing social media. Social competencies primarily concern recognizing the role of the exchange of ideas and linguistic skills in the modern world. Graduates are equipped with competences in digital marketing and social media management. They can find employment as developers in the gaming industry (both in game design and their elements: graphics, animations, textual content, and levels), in trade and public media, cultural institutions, PR, and advertising.

EDITING

Full-time first-cycle degree programme, general academic profile

The programme provides graduates with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for professionals dealing with the editing of texts, typesetting, or graphic processing of publications. Graduates acquire extensive knowledge in several areas, including: the principles of text editing and technical preparation using modern software, copyright and publishing law, graphic design, publishing market mechanisms and marketing, and the communication and function of information in cyberspace. Education is conducted in the following elective areas: 1. Publishing Management – prepares students to work as publishing house managers and organizers; allows for establishing their own publishing and proofreading offices. 2. Publication Design – prepares students for work as editors, proofreaders, or publishing specialists in new media and traditional media.

ENGLISH IN PUBLIC COMMUNICATION

Conducted in English, this programme prepares students to face the challenges of a highly competitive labor market in an increasingly global society. It offers an integrated approach to public communication in politics, culture, society, management, business, and technology. Students expand their practical English language skills to C1 level; simultaneously, all students develop a second foreign language to B2 level. Core courses, including public communication and public relations, cultural and media studies, persuasion and rhetoric, and intercultural communication, develop and broaden the knowledge and skills required in analyzing various communicative situations, managing information, and creating effective messages across different media. Within the programme, students choose a specific modular educational path, where specialized courses allow for the development of additional competencies in: 1. Business English, 2. Media English, or 3. English with Polish as a Foreign Language (for international students).

ENGLISH PHILOLOGY

Full-time and part-time first-cycle and second-cycle degree programmes, general academic profile

First-cycle students acquire knowledge in the literature, linguistics, culture, and history of English-speaking countries and expand their practical English language skills to C1 level. Within this programme, they choose a specific modular educational path where specialized courses allow for developing additional competencies – in full-time studies in: 1. Cultural Studies, 2. Translation Studies, 3. English with Spanish, or 4. English with Italian; and in part-time studies in: 5. Business English. All students develop a second foreign language at B2 level. The second-cycle programme offers the opportunity to develop and work in a challenging academic environment. In addition to developing practical language skills at proficiency level, students deepen their knowledge in the humanities within chosen scientific disciplines: 1. Literary Studies/Cultural Studies or 2. Linguistics/Translation Studies.

ENGLISH PHILOLOGY - PRACTICAL PROFILE

Full-time first-cycle degree programme, practical profile

An innovative educational programme that enables students to combine their academic development with the practical application of knowledge and skills in a business environment. Students learn how to operate in international manufacturing companies, developing their skills in analysis, planning, management, economics, or IT; simultaneously, they expand their practical English language skills to C1 level. All students develop a second foreign language at B2 level. The study programme covers a range of business topics such as change management, project management, logistics, international trade and commercial law, business negotiations, and building relationships in the business world. In semesters 4 and 5, students complete internships (960 hours total) in companies, firms, corporations, or institutions of their choice. In semesters 5 and 6, they prepare a practical diploma thesis.

ENGLISH PHILOLOGY: TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMME

Full-time and part-time second-cycle degree programme, general academic profile

This programme, conducted in English, prepares students to teach English as a foreign language. In addition to developing practical language skills at C2 proficiency level, students deepen their academic knowledge in applied linguistics, foreign language teaching methodology, psychology, and pedagogy. Over three semesters, they complete a total of 150 hours of teaching practice. They graduate with general preparation for teaching English to all age groups and in all types of schools, and with qualifications entitling them to teach English in state schools at the second (primary school) and third (secondary school) educational stages, in line with Ministry of Education guidelines. They may find employment in public and private schools at all levels of education, in language schools as English teachers, but also in sectors requiring humanities education, including advanced language competencies, information retrieval skills, analysis and synthesis of information, e.g., in cultural institutions, the business sector, or services.

POLISH STUDIES

Full-time and part-time second-cycle degree programme, general academic profile

Students acquire philological knowledge and skills in the history of Polish and world literature, contemporary literature, poetics, theory of the literary work, as well as contemporary and historical linguistics. Education in the first-cycle programme takes place in the following elective areas of education: 1. Humanities and Arts – graduates are prepared to work in the media culture sector (as columnists, literary critics, journalists, cultural events animators, employees of culture departments in local government institutions and cultural centers). 2. Image and Promotional Communication – graduates are specialists able to cooperate effectively with the media, familiar with promotional communication tools, and mindful of ethics and etiquette in interpersonal communication. In the second-cycle programme, students deepen and broaden their philological knowledge and skills acquired in the first-cycle studies in two elective areas: 1. Teaching Polish as a Native Language – graduates obtain full professional preparation enabling work as teachers of Polish in all types of schools. 2. Philological Comparative Studies – graduates acquire the ability to compare works and statements from different semiotic spheres, epochs, and linguistic (national) areas.

ROMANCE STUDIES FROM THE BASICS

This programme responds to the labor market’s demand for specialists with advanced knowledge of French for contacts with French-speaking clients/partners in various areas, e.g., business relations, trade, services, promotion, production, telecommunications. Enhanced linguistic, communicative, and intercultural competencies offer a chance for career development in international companies, in state and local government administration in various organizational units, e.g., departments of foreign cooperation, promotion, public relations, in public and private cultural institutions, and other organizations.

GAME STUDIES

Full-time first-cycle degree programme, practical profile

The programme provides education in the knowledge and skills related to creating and analyzing games. Students learn game creation – their design, programming, and the creation of graphic and textual content. They develop the ability to analyze games as cultural texts and as products on the publishing market, and practical competencies related to the creative and publishing process in the video, board, role-playing (RPG), wargaming, card, and other game markets. Graduates acquire knowledge in creating programmes, coding in various languages, and designing graphic content. The programme also includes 960 hours of internships, and a large portion of the classes is conducted in a workshop format. Graduates find employment in the creative and publishing game market as game creators (game designers, level designers, narrative/quest designers, graphic designers, graphic artists, animators, and broadly understood content creators) as well as researchers, critics, testers, translators, etc. They are prepared to work in the broadly understood creative and publishing industry in the area of new media, in cultural institutions, the PR industry, and advertising.

GERMAN STUDIES

Full-time first-cycle and second-cycle degree programmes, general academic profile

The programme develops competencies in the German language, leading to C1 level in the first-cycle and C2 in the second-cycle. Students acquire a general humanities education, deepen their knowledge of the German language, realities, culture, and history of German-speaking countries, and also gain competencies oriented towards a specific profession: e.g., translator, customer service specialist for German-speaking clients, or teacher. In the first-cycle programme, students choose from the following modules: 1. Translation Studies – a module of translation courses, particularly preparing for the profession of translator; students acquire practical skills in translating general, literary, and specialized texts, written and oral translations (simultaneous and consecutive). 2. Deutsch in Recht und Wirtschaft (German in Law and Economics) – a module enabling the acquisition of basic knowledge in selected topics from the field of law and economics as well as practical knowledge of German in specialist registers: legal and economic. In the second-cycle programme, students choose either module 1. Linguistik, Translatorik, Interkulturelle Kommunikation (Linguistics, Translation Studies, Intercultural Communication) or module 2. Fachsprachen, Medien, Kommunikation (Specialized Languages, Media, and Communication). Regardless of the chosen module, students can acquire qualifications to teach German in all types of schools.

ENGLISH FOR TOURISM

Full-time first-cycle degree programme, practical profile

This innovative and nationally pioneering programme combines traditional academic courses with a wide range of practical exercises, seminars, and professional internships conducted in tourism industry environments outside the University. The first three semesters are divided into two parts: academic (10 weeks of classes at the University) and practical (the remainder of the semester). During these semesters, students complete a total of 450 hours of professional internships. In semester 4, students undergo a traineeship (480 hours total) in hotels, travel agencies, tour operators, or administrative services in selected tourism enterprises. In semesters 5 and 6, students work on their practical diploma theses. Students expand their practical English language skills to C1 level; simultaneously, all students develop a second foreign language at B2 level. Additionally, already in the first year of study, students complete a mandatory 36-hour course to become a youth recreation leader, during which they acquire the appropriate competencies to work with children and youth at organized summer camps and trips.

BUSINESS LANGUAGE

Full-time first-cycle degree programme, practical profile

The aim of this programme is to prepare graduates for work requiring knowledge of foreign languages and orientation in business, international relations, tourism, and advertising. The study programme combines language classes – in Russian and English – with classes in, among others, basics of economics, commercial law, marketing, etc. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme fosters the acquisition of high substantive qualifications, i.e., fluent mastery of both languages to an equal degree, skills in the field of business communication and economic entrepreneurship, knowledge concerning the law and mechanisms of economic life, as well as the essence and principles of marketing and advertising. The graduates are prepared to work in state institutions and private companies where linguistic, logistical, organizational, managerial, and interpersonal knowledge and skills are required.

GERMAN FOR BUSINESS AND PUBLIC COMMUNICATION

Full-time first-cycle degree programme, practical profile

The programme meets the needs of the market in the sector of modern business services, in the SME sector, and everywhere where public communication plays a significant role. An integral part of the programme is an extended professional practice conducted in one of the partner companies. The study programme primarily includes courses focused on the practical learning of German as well as courses which, through their tailored content, allow for efficient functioning in a business environment and the sphere of public services. The classes cover such topics as: specialist vocabulary, media communication, the art of public presentation, and the use of digital tools for business communication. Through classes and internships, students cooperate with leading companies, schools, and cultural institutions in the region. Students also have numerous opportunities to participate in training organized by the Faculty’s partners and take part in German-language scientific and educational events that allow them to develop their interests and acquire necessary skills and competencies. The programme prepares students for work in enterprises and institutions as well as for running their own businesses – wherever German is an indispensable element of public communication on various levels. Students are able to communicate effectively with German-speaking interlocutors, learn about the recruitment and negotiation process in German, and the basics of business correspondence.

POLISH FOR BEGINNERS WITH GERMAN

Full-time first-cycle degree programme (no prior knowledge of Polish required), general academic profile

The programme is addressed to international students who are interested in acquiring fluent command of Polish (at C1 level) and a good command of German (at B2 level). Students are introduced to Polish and German country studies (geography, history, culture, customs). In the first-cycle programme, students choose from two modules that allow them to learn specialist language: 1. Polish and German in Business or 2. Polish and German in Tourism. The opportunity to participate in a vibrant student movement and internships in various institutions provide experience needed for future professional work. Graduates are prepared to organize work, make independent decisions, competently serve clients, and handle institutional matters in both, Polish and German. Graduates may find employment, among others, in enterprises operating in Poland and in foreign markets, as well as in cultural institutions promoting various forms of contacts between countries.

APPLIED LINGUISTICS

Full-time first-cycle degree programme, general academic profile

The programme equips graduates with professionally oriented linguistic, communicative, and intercultural competencies, underpinned by knowledge of the geographical, social, economic, and cultural realities of the countries associated with the languages studied. During the studies, students deepen their knowledge of English to C1 level and acquire the ability to use Chinese from scratch to a level of fluent communicativeness (B2). Graduates of the module: 1. Polish, English and Chinese in Business are prepared to use their language competencies in the business sphere. Typical job roles include sales representative, organizers of business meetings, trade agreement negotiators, employees of international economic integration institutions, employees of media and advertising agencies and PR, etc. Graduates of the specialization: 2. Teaching Polish as a Foreign Language are prepared to use their language competencies in glottodidactic activities, conducted domestically and abroad. Typical forms of employment include instructor of Polish as a foreign language.

SPEECH THERAPY

Full-time second-cycle degree programme, practical profile

At present speech and language therapy/logopedics is a modern field with a complex and applied character, which in turn influences the interdisciplinary nature of the programme covering three basic perspectives: linguistic, medical, and social. During the studies, students complete 480 hours of clinical practice. The programme educates specialists and prepares them for work in various institutions and environments, including speech therapy practices, speech therapy clinics, hospitals, social assistance centers, as well as educational institutions (conditional on completion of the elective teaching module). The aim of the programme is the substantive and practical preparation of students for prophylactic, diagnostic, and therapeutic activities covering speech/communication competence disorders within general speech-language pathology, while working with both children and adults. The programme can be undertaken by graduates of first-cycle studies in speech therapy.

SPEECH THERAPY WITH POLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Full-time first-cycle degree programme, general academic profile

The programme is aimed at those who wish to work as speech-language pathologists and lecturers of Polish as a foreign language. Students receive basic general humanities education as well as specialized education covering fundamental, detailed knowledge in linguistics and literary studies. They are introduced to the linguistic foundations of speech therapy and to interdisciplinary knowledge from medical sciences and Polish glottodidactics necessary to perform the profession of speech therapist and language instructor. They acquire the ability to assess speech and language phenomena, identify irregularities in speech development, and classify various forms of speech disorders. Students learn the procedures for diagnostic and therapeutic management of selected disorders of speech and language development. Graduates possess numerous practical skills, have the competency enabling them to teach Polish to foreigners and bilingual children, and to independently conduct diagnostic procedures as well as plan and conduct speech therapy for selected speech disorders. They also acquire glottodidactic competencies preparing them to teach Polish to foreigners and bilingual children and to work as a lecturer in schools of Polish as a foreign language in Poland and abroad. Graduates receive partial professional preparation in the field of general speech therapy and full qualifications in the area of Polish glottodidactics. Graduates acquire the knowledge and skills allowing them to continue speech therapy studies at the second-cycle level, after which they obtain a diploma fully entitling them to work as speech-language therapists in various institutions and environments, including speech therapy clinics, practices, hospitals, social assistance centers, as well as educational institutions (conditional on pedagogical preparation and completion of the teaching module).
